In literature, you will find different rates with regards to the success for a treatment to quit smoking with acupuncture. On average, the success rate will be between 50 and 70 percent. This chance is therefore many times greater than when you would quit on your own.
Acupuncture for quitting smoking, deals with both the physical and the mental nicotine addiction. The physical nicotine addiction causes the withdrawal symptoms when you stop smoking, such as anxiety, nervousness, irritability, concentration problems, headaches, sweating, sleeping disorders, constipation and increased appetite.
Acupuncture has a number of effects on most smokers:
– it increases the willpower to quit smoking
– the tobacco taste will be experienced as disgusting
– the withdrawal symptoms decrease
Frequently, the classic body acupuncture is combined with ear acupuncture, including the use of painless staying needles which stay in the ear for a couple of days. This will diminish the “desire for cigarettes”, the need for nicotine.
The acupuncture treatment will be started within 24 hours of the “stop day”. Plan this “stop day” therefore carefully during a calm period in your life, and live consciously towards this day. And this day does not necessarily need to be 1st of January!
Usually, 3 to 4 treatments suffice in a period of 3 weeks. You will get a customized treatment plan, depending on your personal “smoker profile”. It is very important that you also want to definitively stop smoking yourself. Acupuncture of course does not replace your motivation and your perseverance.
